The 500 class are widely used for shunting, in Adelaide and throughout regional SA. Some saw use on construction trains for the standard gauge. A few still survive on in service, although most have been scrapped.
508 and 527 are being used for construction work on the Alice-Darwin line, at Tennant Creek and Katherine respectively; although the former was involved in a level crossing accident that put it out of service.
