The 930 class followed on from the 900s for working on the Adelaide-Melbourne line, and they too could be seen on the Overland. Another common appearance was on intercapital freights, and they could be seen on such services right up to the end of the 1980s. The first six had only one cab; the remainder had two cabs. Most of the class has now been scrapped.
961 still saw occasional use until the arrival of the 422 class, then it was withdrawn, and later sold to Silverton as the first of the 44s class.
