The most powerful locos in Australian National's fleet, the AN class are used primarily on intercapital freight services. All have now been acquired by National Rail.
 
National Rail/Pacific National:
These locos are used primarily in South Australia, on such services as hauling ore trafic from Broken Hill to Port Pirie. They make an occasional appearances outside of this state.

Four of the class went on a one-month visit in 2002 to NSW for hauling coal trains.
