The CL class were ordered for the completion of the standard gauge from Broken Hill to Port Port Pirie. Again, they were used on intercapital freight traffic, as well as Broken Hill ore traffic and Leigh Creek coal traffic. They were also used on the long-distance passenger services.
In 1993, they were rebuilt into the CLF and CLP classes .

CLF/CLP classes:
After they were rebuiltthe CLF saw a similar working area as the CLs, which was later extended to Melbourne with the standardisation. Meanwhile, the CLP class were intended for hauling the Indian Pacific, Ghan, and Overland. However, this work has since been taken over by other classes. As a result, the CLP class are now seen on freight trains.
Many of the class are now in NSW on a Manildra Group contract.
