The NT class also worked both the Central and Northern Australia
Railways, although primarily the latter where their greater power was
used for the
Frances Creek iron ore traffic. They also saw use on the narrow gauge
branch
lines out of Peterborough, Gladstone, etc.. In the early-mid 1970's,
the
combination of a head-on collision, lower demand for iron ore, and
Cylcone
Tracy affected both the future of the NAR and the number of NTs in
service.
The "final straw" for many of the class was the standardisation to
Alice
Springs.
NT67/76 were at work on the Quorn and Wilmington lines until around
1988, while NT69/73/74 were moved to Port Lincoln in the mid-1980's,
and survived until 1988/9. Only one of the class has survived.
