These electric locos were the mainstay of the SECV's fleet from their introduction up until 1993, when the electric railway was closed in 1993, and replaced by the CC class diesel-hydraulic locos. On notable feature about all of these locomotives was their low profile (when compared to other locos). The SECV operation was one of the earlier electric railways in Australia.
Initially, the first two batches of locos were used on the railways running into the coal mine at Yallourn, and their task was to haul coal from the dredges to the nearby Yallourn power stations. This finished in 1984 when long-distance conveyer belts took over.
When the Interconnnecting Railway between Yallourn and Morwell was opened in the early 1950's, the locos were also used on trains hauling coal from the Yallourn mine to the Morwell briquette plant, and then hauling briquettes on the return trip. Later, when conveyors replaced trains in the Yallourn mine, all the locos were used on the ICR. Nearly all of the first two batches however were scrapped in the early 1970's.
By the time the electric railway was closed in 1993, there were only about half a dozen locos remaining in service.

One of the most interesting items concerning this fleet is that in 1941, there were apparently two dual electric/diesel locomotives ordered (but never delivered) from Henschel/Siemens.
