The 442 class was used to replace the 40 class, with the latter becoming trade-ins. After the first 34 locos had been delivered, A E Goodwin went out of business, and Comeng took over the contract. They were used for mainline traffic, and like the 44s, many ended up being based at Broadmeadow. Now, all have been withdrawn, after some hung on for a "last gasp" when required.
Many of the class have been transferred to other operators, these being Silverton, Morrison Knudsen (MKA), and Austrac. Many of the others have been scrapped. The remainder were auctioned, going to CFCLA as the GL and JL classes.

Junee Railway Workshops (Austrac):
These locos were refurbished, and both were then leased to BHP at Port Kembla.
They were withdrawn when National Rail took over the BHP work from Junee Railway Workshops (Austrac), and were rebuilt as part of CFCLA's GL class.

Silverton:
These locos were bought at the SRA's loco auction, and some were then been refurbished. Later, they were also hired to NR while the NR class locos were being constructed. The range of operations is the same as for the 27 class. Some are based at Parkes, while others operate in the Sydney area.

CFCLA - JL:
These locos have been refurbished, and are used in southern New South Wales and the Sydney area.
JL401-402 are in an SRA-style livery; JL403 is in a CFCLA livery; while JL404 is in R&H Transport livery.
Two have gone on to be rebuilt as GL class locos.

CFCLA - GL:
These rebuilds are now all in service, and are being leased to a variety of operators in the Sydney/NSW area.
