The 70 class were used for shunting, starting off in Sydney, but later being moved to the Wollongong - Port Kembla area. Here, they were used on workmens trains between Wollongong and the steel mills, as well as some use on school trains.
Around 1990, two were sent to the Emu Bay Railway for spare parts.
