The XPT is a version of the British HST (High Speed Train) that has been modified for Australian conditions. The "XP" class are the power cars for the XPTs, providing power for traction, and other equipment on the train. The XPTs were used intially for passenger services within NSW, and this was later extended to services to Brisbane and Melbourne. They have a maximum speed of 160 km/h for normal passenger services. The XPTs are based at Meeks Road (near Sydenham in Sydney).

For some strange reason, Countrylink has changed the names of the XPT power cars - some have actually had three different names. They are named after cities and towns that the XPTs travel to or through (or have travelled through, in the case of Tamworth).
Currently, only XP2003, 4, 6, 7, and 17 still retain their names.
