The C class are the heaviest V/Line locos (with rumours as to just
how heavy they actually are), and saw use mostly on intercapital
freight services. Indeed, one of the most impressive sights on
Victorian railways was that
of back-to-back Cs on a long "Jet". The C class were originally to be
numbered H220-9, following on from H220 "Heavy Harry".
The class was sold to National Rail in
the
late 1990's.
National
Rail:
Most of the C class' time with NR was spent in storage, however, C505
and 508 are high-horsepower shunters in Melbourne,
although some (including myself) would see this as being ignominious.
The two locos are at the Melbourne Steel and Freight Terminals
respectively.
Later, all of the class (except C501) were sold to Silverton.
Silverton
/ Coote Industrial:
Silverton has refurbished, renumbered and repainted the C class, with
most being used on trains in the Sydney region. Meanwhile, C505 and 508
spent time as high-horsepower shunters in Melbourne,
leased back to Pacific National.
CFCLA:
Three of the C class passed into CFCLA ownership during 2008. They are
operating in NSW.
Preserved locomotives:

Named locomotives:
C501 | George Brown |
George Brown was the last of the Chairman of Commissioners, retiring
in 1973.
