The E class were the first non-steam locomotives on the Victorian (and for that matter any Australian) railways. With the work on electrifying Melbourne's suburban network, the E class was used for shunting, and for suburban goods work. The first series was nicknamed the "Steeple Cabs" and the second series "Butterboxes". Both first series locos were scrapped in the 1950's. Some of the second series survived into early 1980's before being withdrawn.
