This loco is a replacement for G517 and G518, involved in a collision at Ararat in 1999. It is basically a Westrail Q class in Freight Australia livery.

V544 was intended to be primarily used on Melbourne-Perth traffic. It has also seen use on the Port Augusta - Leigh Creek coal trains.
