The J class saw a similar use to the H class; firstly for construction work on the standard gauge, and then mostly shunting at the main yards in Perth and along the standard gauge. Most of the class were sold to Great Northern in the mid-90's.

Great Northern:
These locos were used for shunting in Melbourne yard, and at NR's Melbourne Freight Terminal and Melbourne Steel Terminal. They were also used on construction trains for the Melbourne-Adelaide standardisation. 104 spent a short time with GNR before going on to RTS.
The other three have been sold to CFCLA.

RTS:
About the only use the loco used to get was shunting the Overland between Spencer Street station and the Dynon Car Shed. Although an NR class took over this service. However, it has recently been sold to APT (Freightlink) for use as a shunter.

CFCLA:
These locos were used for shunting in Melbourne yard, and at NR's Melbourne Freight Terminal and Melbourne Steel Terminal. One has been sold to Freightlink as a shunter. They are leased to Southern Shorthaul Railroad.

Freightlink:
These locos are used for shunting at Darwin (105) and Alice Springs (104).
