The two classes were used mostly for mineral traffic, either bauxite
or salt. Lefroy Salt used RA1917 and 1918 for a while on its line. In
1974,
three RA class were converted to KA class, one
of
which was later returned. Later on, the R class were used in the
southwest
of WA, while the RA's were used up to Geraldton. All were withdrawn,
and
most scrapped, following the introduction of the P class.
The last surviving R class has been sold to South Spur Rail.
KA class:
The only difference of note about the KA class was a change in gauge,
due to a need for more standard gauge locos.
South
Spur Rail:
South Spur have both an R class and a KA class; the former was
converted to standard gauge.
