The 48 class are the most ubiquitous loco in Australia, and can be found almost anywhere in NSW. They are are used for branchline work, as well as mainline coal and grain haulage. The class can be divided into 4 subgroups as follows: Mk1 - 4801-45; Mk2 - 4846-85; Mk3 - 4886-125; Mk4 - 48126-165. Some units have been sold to Silverton (to add to their 48s class), AN, and Austrac, while virtually all of the Mk1 locos have been withdrawn. Scrapping of the first series continues, with several more to be scrapped in the future. Two are also used by the Rail Infrastructure Corporation; these being in RIC livery.
Seven locos (Mk2) have been rebuilt as the PL class for Portlink traffic.
The drought has now seen even more of the class withdrawn.
Several more have recently been sold to Silverton, although these locos are little more than spare parts.

One final comment is that the 48s are among the "dirtiest" diesels in the country when it comes to their exhausts - in some cases, it is black enough to look like a steam loco!

PL class:
These locos are used on "Portlink" trains in the Sydney metropolitan area - hauling container traffic between shipping terminals. Two locomotives are used on the one train, in push-pull operation. Changes include the cab being cut-down (similar to the AN/ASR DA class), and provision of air-conditioning. PL1 and 2 are now shunters in Adelaide.

Junee Railway Workshops (Austrac):
These locos have been refurbished, and three of them are used on Austrac's own freight services, from the NSW Riverina to Sydney, as well as on Melbourne-Sydney trains for a while.
Meanwhile, 4820 is being restored to service.
