The "original" locos in this class were 27-29, operating on narrow
gauge. With standardisation, all were converted to standard gauge, with
one being considered excess and sold to AN.
Later, Silverton
bought several 830's from AN - TasRail
(see 830 class page for details on
these: 48s30-31)
to be
refurbished, along with a couple as spares. At SRA's big loco auction
in
1994, Silverton bought some 48's from
Freightcorp (see 48 class page for
details on these: 48s32-37, and more recent purchases), also to
be
refurbished. These were leased to NR while the latter had a locomotive
shortage,
and were mostly used as trailing units in SA/VIC/NSW.
Most are now based at Parkes, and some are used on mineral/coal trains
for
Pacific National.
