The K class was used intially for construction, and later for grain
traffic,
on the standard gauge line. They were also used for a short time for
iron
ore traffic from Koolyanobbing, and occasionally saw use on the Indian
Pacific. Now, as their numbers decline, they are used for shunting,
with
most being stored at Forrestfield. K202 and 203 were sold to
Goldsworthy Mining.
Nearly all of the remaining locos have been sold to SCT and South Spur
Rail, where they are still
used
as shunters.
SCT:
The locos are used for shunting at SCT's terminal at Kewdale (Perth),
and were also used at North Dynon (Melbourne).
South
Spur Rail:
These locos are used for shunting and mainline
work. They operate on the standard gauge between Perth and Kalgoorlie.
Recent purchases from BHP's Port Kembla
operations have seen the start of a NSW branch, 'Momentum Rail'.
BHP
(Goldsworthy Mining):
Two locos went to Goldsworthy as
replacements for locos lost in accidents. They were later transferred
to BHP's Port Kembla operations.
BHP (Port
Kembla):
Here, the two locos are part of the D46
class. They have recently also been sold to South Spur Rail.
