These locos were Robe River's main source of motive power until most were rebuilt as part of the CM40-8M class. 9424 was bought second-hand from the USA, while 9416 came from Hamersley Iron, and the "new" 9410 came from BHP Port Hedland. As with the same model locos at BHP Port Hedland and Hamersley Iron, Comeng took over the contracts when Goodwin collapsed.
With the latest Dash-9 arrivals, the last of the class have been withdrawn, and are stored at Dampier (7-Mile depot).

CM40-8M Rebuilds:
These locos were the mainstay of Robe River's fleet until recently, and like their BHP equivalents, are rebuilt from the 1960's/70's C636/M636 locos. Some also are rebuilt from the C630 class.
However, with the introduction of the latest Dash-9 units, these locos have now become surplus and were withdrawn in 2004. Nearly all have recently been returned to service, due to demand for motive power.
