Model Numbers
Alco is an abbreviation for the "American Locomotive Company", an
American
locomotive manufacturer that was prominent in the 50's and 60's. A E
Goodwin
(of Sydney) was the initial license-holder; they built close to 500
locos.
In the early 70's, they went out of business, and Comeng
took over. Comeng continued on with Goodwin's contracts, and built a
further
100 or so locomotives. In the mid-70's, Alco went out of business, and
the Montreal Locomotive Works (MLW) took over production from Alco.
As well, Alco/MLW have built around 40 locos for Australian operators.
